Maharashtra is making history by launching India’s first dedicated Artificial Intelligence (AI) university. This move strengthens the state’s position as a leader in AI research and innovation. Maharashtra’s Information Technology Minister, Ashish Shelar, announced the initiative, highlighting the government’s vision to advance AI education and technology.
The AI university will act as a centre of excellence, bringing together academia, industry leaders, and policymakers. A task force of AI experts, educators, and representatives from IIT Mumbai, IIM Mumbai, Google India, Mahindra Group, and L&T is guiding the university’s development. The institution will prioritise research, policy-making, and skill development to prepare students for AI-driven careers.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that this initiative aligns with the government’s strategy to integrate AI across industries. The university aims to bridge the gap between industry demands and academic learning by producing a skilled workforce.
This initiative builds on Maharashtra’s previous efforts in AI education, such as the Universal AI University in Karjat, India’s first dedicated AI institution established in 2023. With the new state-led AI university, Maharashtra is reinforcing its role as a hub for AI research and education.
The task force is finalising the university’s roadmap. Several meetings have outlined its framework and objectives. The government sees this institution as a catalyst for AI adoption, investment attraction, and Maharashtra’s emergence as a global leader in AI technology.
