The Tamil film Mersal had heart-throb Vijay playing triple roles for the first time, and this 2017 blockbuster, which was a huge hit in Tamil, is all set to re-release on June 20, 2025, all over Northern territories and across Karnataka and Kerala by veteran distributor Pawan Kumar Tolasaria of Rosika Distributors.
The film stars Vijay in triple roles, alongside S. J. Suryah, Kajal Aggarwal, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, and Nithya Menen. Sathyaraj, Jackie Shroff, Vadivelu, Hareesh Peradi, Kovai Sarala, and Sathyan play supporting roles. It is the second out of the three collaborations between Vijay and Atlee, before they began working with others.
“The film follows two brothers who were separated after the younger one’s birth—Vetri, a vigilante magician who is against medical crimes, and Maaran, a reputed doctor who charges meagre amounts from his patients,” said Pawan Kumar Tolasaria.
Shot across various international locations, Mersal has prominent backdrops of Gdańsk, Poland, and Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. The background score and soundtrack album were composed by A. R. Rahman, while the cinematography was done by G. K. Vishnu and edited by Ruben, Pawan Kumar Tolasaria further added.
During the time of its original release around Diwali 2017, Mersal shattered all box office records, and it went down in history as the highest-grossing film in Vijay’s career at that time. The film received mostly positive reviews, with critics praising the performances of Vijay, Nithya Menen, and S. J. Suryah, A. R. Rahman’s soundtrack, cinematography, social message, and Atlee’s direction.
Mersal was also released in China, and it was screened at the largest cinema theatre in Europe, Grand Rex in France. The film was also screened at the Hainan International Film Festival in China and the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival in South Korea.
