Commuters in Mumbai will now have to spend more to board a BEST bus. Starting Thursday, the minimum fare has doubled from ₹5 to ₹10.
The fare hike was approved by the BEST Undertaking to cover rising expenses. This revision aims to generate an additional ₹590 crore every year.
New Fare Chart
- Minimum fare (0–5 km): ₹10
- 5–10 km: ₹15
- 10–15 km: ₹20
- Above 15 km: ₹25
Earlier, a journey of up to 5 km cost just ₹5. Now it’s ₹10. The ₹20 and ₹25 slabs remain unchanged.
Why the Hike?
The undertaking cited rising fuel, maintenance, and operational costs. Officials said the revenue boost will help run over 3,000 electric buses and improve services.
However, daily commuters are unhappy. Many say the fare hike is sudden and unfair, especially when wages haven’t increased.
BEST’s Response
Officials claim the hike is necessary to reduce financial stress. With over 35 lakh daily riders, the fare rise is expected to make a big difference to revenue.
No new concession rules have been introduced. Existing passes and student discounts remain the same for now.
