Mumbai Metro Line 9’s Phase 1 trial began on Tuesday. The trial run was flagged off by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar also present at the event. It marks a key milestone in the city’s metro expansion.
The corridor links Dahisar East to Kashigaon, covering 9.2 km of the planned 11.38 km stretch. This new line is part of Metro Red Line 7’s extension and aims to ease traffic between the western suburbs and the city.
How It Connects Mumbai
Metro Line 9 will eventually connect Andheri to Mira-Bhayandar. Phase 1 offers a direct metro link between Andheri and Kashimira. In Phase 2, it will stretch further to Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium in Bhayandar (West).
The route includes both elevated and underground segments. Two stations — Mandapeshwar and Shimpoli are underground. The current trial run tests core systems like braking, signalling, and track safety.
What Lies Ahead
If successful, Metro 9’s public operations may start by the end of this year. Once open, it’s expected to cut congestion on the Western Express Highway and improve daily commutes in Mira-Bhayandar and Thane
