Unexpected downpour soaks city, brings relief and chaos
Mumbai woke up to an unexpected twist in May weather. Light showers and thunderstorms lashed parts of the city on May 6, bringing much-needed relief from rising temperatures. However, the downpour also threw parts of the city’s daily routine into disarray.
Trains hit, roads jammed
Several local train services faced delays. Central Railway trains were especially affected, with commuters stuck at stations during peak hours.
Even roads weren’t spared. Heavy rain led to slow-moving traffic in parts of Mumbai, including Andheri, Kurla, and Sion.
What IMD says
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted light to moderate rain and thunderstorms over the next two days. Lightning and gusty winds are also expected. While this spell may cool things down, officials warn of short-term disruptions.
Maximum temperatures dipped by 2-3 degrees. The city is likely to stay cloudy, with the possibility of isolated showers till May 8.
Social media flooded too
Videos and photos of the sudden rainfall flooded social media platforms. Some showed lightning striking in the distance. Others captured drenched streets and people enjoying the rain.
Meteorologists say this is a pre-monsoon development. The actual monsoon is still weeks away. But for now, Mumbaikars can enjoy a brief break from the heat and brace for a few wet days ahead.
