Mumbai is all set to sail into a new commuting era. Inspired by Kochi, the city will soon introduce its first “Water Metro” service. The project aims to ease road congestion and offer a faster travel alternative.
The Maharashtra government has already sought assistance from the Union government to bring this dream to life. Electric ferries will connect key spots like Vasai, Thane, and Borivali.
21 Stations in the Pipeline
According to officials, 21 stations have been identified across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. These include Borivali, Mira Bhayandar, Vasai, and Thane.
Moreover, the water metro is expected to offer a smoother ride, slashing travel time significantly.
Notably, the service will be fully electric, reducing the carbon footprint.
Travel Time and Eco-Friendly Focus
Travelling between Vasai and Thane could take only 40 to 50 minutes by ferry. Today, the same trip by road often stretches over two hours.
Besides, the electric ferries promise a quieter, cleaner journey compared to traditional road transport.
Next Steps
The Maharashtra Maritime Board will lead the project. Officials are working on project reports and have sought financial and technical help from the Centre.
The state hopes to replicate Kochi’s successful model but on a much bigger scale.
Water metros could soon become a major part of Mumbai’s future commute story.
