As anticipation builds for Ramayana, one of Indian cinema’s most ambitious mythological films, actors Ranbir Kapoor and Yash have offered fresh insights into portraying two of the epic’s most iconic characters. Speaking during an interaction with IMDb at the San Diego Comic-Con, the actors opened up about the responsibility, emotional depth and challenges of bringing Lord Rama and Ravana to the big screen.
Ranbir Kapoor, who essays the role of Lord Rama, described the project as one of the most significant experiences of his career. He said the responsibility of portraying a character worshipped by millions across generations was something the entire cast and crew took seriously.
“Every Indian grows up with the Ramayana in some form,” Kapoor said, adding that the team approached the film with commitment, sincerity and faith, fully aware of its cultural and spiritual significance.
The actor also reflected on the emotional and moral weight of playing Lord Rama, who is revered as Maryada Purushottam for embodying virtues such as righteousness, sacrifice and compassion. According to Kapoor, portraying a figure regarded as the ideal son, husband, brother and leader was both inspiring and intimidating.
He admitted that stepping into the role came with immense responsibility, saying that doing justice to such a deeply respected character was a daunting task. However, he added that everyone involved in the project remained committed to honouring the legacy of the timeless epic.
Meanwhile, Kannada superstar Yash, who plays Ravana in the film, shared his perspective on the legendary antagonist, describing him as the “original villain.”
Explaining Ravana’s significance to audiences unfamiliar with Indian mythology, Yash said the character has influenced countless fictional villains over centuries.
“The story has survived for thousands of years,” he said, adding that many memorable antagonists across literature and cinema appear to draw inspiration from Ravana’s complex personality.
However, Yash emphasised that Ravana is not a one-dimensional villain. According to him, what makes the character compelling is his belief that his own actions are justified.
“The greatest villains are those who believe they are right,” Yash said, noting that Ravana had a purpose and a strong point of view. At the same time, he pointed out that the character’s downfall lies in the fine line separating confidence from arrogance.
During the conversation, Kapoor was also asked to choose one moment from the film that left the deepest impact on him.
The actor recalled the emotional sequence depicting Lord Rama’s exile from Ayodhya after being asked to spend 14 years in the forest. He described the scene as one of the most moving chapters of the Ramayana and revealed that the atmosphere on set became highly emotional while filming it.
According to Kapoor, the sacrifice made by Lord Rama continues to resonate deeply with audiences, making it one of the most memorable moments of the production for both the cast and crew.
