The US government has quietly changed the tone on its official Covid-19 website. What was earlier a hub for vaccine updates and test info now paints a very different picture. It’s now backing the controversial theory that the coronavirus leaked from a lab in China.
The website, Covid.gov, now opens with a full-size photo of former President Donald Trump, and criticises the way President Joe Biden and his team handled the pandemic. The site’s new content suggests the real origin of Covid-19 lies in a lab in Wuhan, China, not in nature as previously claimed.
Dr Anthony Fauci, who served as Biden’s top health advisor, is also being called out for pushing what the site describes as the “preferred narrative” that the virus spread naturally from animals.
Five strong claims are listed to support the lab-leak theory. The main argument? The virus started in Wuhan, where China’s top SARS lab is based, and there have been concerns about low safety standards there. The site says if there truly was evidence of a natural origin, it would have been found by now.
Now, this lab theory was once written off as just a conspiracy, but over time, it has gained serious attention in the US. Agencies like the FBI and the Department of Energy have come forward supporting the lab origin possibility, although with varying confidence levels. Even the CIA has now stated that a lab leak is more likely than an animal-based transmission.
Naturally, China has rejected these claims. Their official line remains firm: the lab theory is extremely unlikely. They’ve also warned the US to stop using the origin of the virus for political gain.
All this comes amid increasing tension between the US and China, especially on trade. Just recently, Washington introduced new port charges and raised tariffs on Chinese goods.
The revamped website also takes aim at how the pandemic was handled in the early days. It criticises face masks, social distancing rules, and how alternative treatments were pushed aside. According to the site, there was also coordination with social media companies to silence views that didn’t follow the mainstream line. That’s a claim often repeated by conservative voices in the US.
The Biden administration has denied these accusations, saying it never tried to suppress political or scientific opinions.
This major shift in messaging comes at a time when the Trump-led administration is also cutting back on health sector jobs. About 10,000 jobs are being slashed as part of what’s being called a health department overhaul. The current health secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr, says the focus will now be more on preventing long-term diseases, not just reacting to outbreaks.
With over a million American lives lost to Covid-19, and millions more across the globe, the debate around its origin and how it was managed is clearly far from over.
