The underpass connecting the Mumbai Coastal Road to the upcoming Worli-Sewri Connector is nearing completion and is expected to open next month. This 550-metre-long underpass, constructed beneath Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road in Worli, aims to enhance connectivity for motorists traveling between South Mumbai and the western suburbs.
Currently, vehicles exiting the Worli end of the coastal road can observe the final phase of construction near the exit point. The underpass will start near JK Kapur Chowk, allowing smoother traffic flow from Prabhadevi and Sewri towards Worli. Once operational, drivers will have direct access to Marine Drive or Bandra, reducing congestion on existing roads.
The under-construction Sewri-Worli Connector, a 4.5 km long elevated corridor, is also set to integrate with this underpass. This addition will provide seamless connectivity between South Mumbai and the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL), improving overall traffic movement.
The Mumbai Coastal Road project, launched in 2018, is now 94% complete. The project faced delays due to design modifications, particularly at the Worli end, where the navigation span between two bridge pillars was increased from 56 metres to 120 metres to accommodate the fishing community’s concerns. These changes contributed to a cost escalation of ₹1,000 crore, bringing the total project cost to ₹13,983.8 crore.
Once operational, the underpass and the Sewri-Worli Connector are expected to significantly reduce travel time, ease congestion, and provide a more efficient route for daily commuters.
