Maharashtra is set to honour the legendary filmmaker Dr. V. Shantaram on his 125th birth anniversary, beginning on November 18, 2025. Recognized as one of Indian cinema’s pioneering figures, Dr. Shantaram’s contributions spanned decades. He produced 92 films in Marathi and Hindi, directed 55 films, and also acted in 25 films, leaving an indelible mark on the industry. His cinematic legacy, which blended artistic storytelling with social messages, continues to inspire filmmakers, actors, and audiences alike.
To commemorate this milestone, a series of events and programs are being planned across the state, focusing on cities closely associated with his illustrious career—Kolhapur, Pune, and Mumbai. These programs aim not only to celebrate his cinematic achievements but also to introduce his work to new generations of moviegoers and cinema enthusiasts.
In January 2026, the Asian Film Festival in Mumbai and Thane will feature a special section dedicated exclusively to Dr. V. Shantaram’s films. The festival will highlight his contributions to both Marathi and Hindi cinema, showcasing the breadth and depth of his work. The festival will include screenings, panel discussions, and talks by film scholars and industry veterans, offering audiences insights into Shantaram’s artistic vision and innovative techniques.
Prabhat Chitra Mandal, along with the Federation of Film Societies of India, will organize special shows of Dr. Shantaram’s most celebrated films throughout the year. These screenings aim to provide a holistic view of his career, including classics such as Amar Jyoti (1936), Do Aankhen Barah Haath (1957), and Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje (1955), films that not only entertained audiences but also addressed social issues with a unique narrative style.
Adding an international dimension to the celebrations, Dr. Shantaram’s 1946 classic, Doctor Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani, will be screened at the International Film Festival in Goa. The film, which chronicles the inspiring story of Dr. Kotnis’ humanitarian work in China, continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.
The year-long tribute will conclude with the unveiling of a special postage stamp bearing Dr. Shantaram’s image, recognising his lifelong contributions to Indian cinema and culture. This initiative aims to immortalize his legacy, ensuring that his remarkable journey in filmmaking is celebrated and remembered by generations to come.
Through these celebrations, Maharashtra not only honours Dr. V. Shantaram’s extraordinary achievements but also reaffirms the state’s position as a vibrant hub of Indian cinema, culture, and artistic innovation.
