A key suspect in Canada’s biggest gold heist has been traced to Chandigarh’s outskirts, months after he fled the country following the theft of gold worth ₹173 crore (CAD 22 million) from Toronto’s Pearson International Airport.
Luxury Heist, Quiet Hideout
Simran Preet Panesar, a former Air Canada employee, allegedly played a crucial role in the April 2023 gold and cash robbery. The heist involved a cargo container arriving from Zurich, which was illicitly removed using forged paperwork before disappearing without a trace.
Criminal Trail and International Hunt
After Canadian authorities arrested six others linked to the crime, including Indian-origin men Archit Grover and Parmpal Sidhu, Panesar evaded capture and fled to India. Peel Regional Police had issued a warrant against him, but he remained under the radar until now.
Family Ties and Bollywood Links
Panesar has reportedly been living in *a rented home near Chandigarh with his wife, Preety Panesar, an actress and former *Miss India Uganda. Despite multiple reports confirming his location, he declined to comment when approached.
Extradition Efforts in Motion
Indian and Canadian authorities are exploring legal avenues to bring Panesar to justice. However, his Indian citizenship could complicate direct extradition. Officials believe financial records and electronic communications may provide further evidence of his role in the audacious gold heist.
