The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued an urgent security alert warning Google Chrome users about critical vulnerabilities that could affect devices running Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems. CERT-In cautioned that these vulnerabilities, if exploited, may lead to potential attacks allowing remote execution of malicious code, compromising user data and device security.

According to the advisory, the vulnerabilities affect the browser’s V8 JavaScript engine, which could enable attackers to execute arbitrary code. Additionally, issues with Chrome’s WebRTC component could allow attackers to bypass security protocols. These flaws are particularly concerning as they could affect a wide range of users, making their devices vulnerable to malware and hacking attempts.

CERT-In has recommended that users immediately update their Google Chrome browsers to the latest version to mitigate the risk of exploitation. Google has already released security patches for the affected versions of Chrome. It is advisable for users to enable automatic updates or manually check for updates by navigating to the browser’s settings menu.

For Windows and Mac users, it is crucial to upgrade to Chrome version 109.0.5414.87 or later. Linux users should update to the latest stable release that includes fixes for these vulnerabilities.

Security experts have also advised caution when browsing unknown websites or clicking on unfamiliar links until the update is applied. Users should also consider using antivirus software to scan for any potential malware that might have been introduced through these vulnerabilities.

This alert is part of an ongoing effort by CERT-In to ensure the cybersecurity of Indian internet users. In recent years, several global software companies, including Google, have been proactive in releasing security patches and updates to address vulnerabilities. However, despite these measures, many users continue to neglect timely updates, leaving their devices exposed to cyber threats.

With Google Chrome being one of the most widely used browsers globally, the potential impact of these vulnerabilities is significant. Users are encouraged to follow the security update guidelines and stay vigilant against potential threats.
