IAF test pilot to fly on historic Axiom‑4 mission on 10 June 2025
Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is poised to make history as the first Indian astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS). As the designated pilot aboard the third private Axiom Space mission, Axiom‑4, he will launch on 10 June 2025 at 8:22 a.m. EDT (5:52 p.m. IST) from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket
A decorated test pilot from the Indian Air Force, Shukla has logged over 2,000 flight hours across aircraft like Su‑30 MKI, MiG‑21 and MiG‑29. On station, Shukla and his crew are set to conduct around 60 science experiments from over 30 countries. A key focus is the “Suite Ride” diabetes study—an ISS National Lab‑sponsored project designed to test blood‑glucose monitors and insulin functionality in microgravity
This mission marks India’s first human spaceflight via a private partnership and enhances its global presence in space exploration.
Delhi Braces for Scorching Heat; Thermometer May Hit 45 °C
IMD issues alerts as residents prepare for intense summer heat
Delhi is set for a blistering few days, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting temperatures may climb to 45 °C. A yellow alert has been issued as the capital enters a serious heatwave phase, accompanied by intense sunshine and little relief
Safdarjung weather station recorded 42.1 °C on 8 June—two degrees above the seasonal average. Meteorologists warn isolated locations could reach 45 °C over Monday and Tuesday. Meanwhile, neighbouring North-West India—including Haryana and Punjab—is also on high alert, with some areas under an orange heatwave advisory and warnings of temperatures surging beyond 43 °C
This heat surge is attributed to dry, hot winds sweeping across the plains. Dusty gusts and a rising heat index—above 47 °C in parts of the National Capital Region—are compounding the discomfort . The monsoon is expected to progress into central and eastern India next week, offering the first signs of relief.
No Slum-Dwellers’ Consent Required for Dharavi Redevelopment
Mumbai redevelopment moves ahead amid political protest
The CEO of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, S V R Srinivas, has clarified that consent from slum dwellers is not required for the redevelopment. Over 50% of residents have reportedly agreed, but the project can proceed without public approval as it has been appointed directly by the Maharashtra government
Dharavi’s redevelopment is being overseen by Nav Bharat Mega Developers Pvt Ltd, a public–private partner of the state government and Adani Realty. The plan aims to provide free housing to 500,000 eligible residents within Dharavi. Another 500,000 deemed ineligible are to be relocated to subsidised rental housing on a 21.25‑acre plot in Kurla, formerly used by Mother Dairy
The project has sparked resistance. On 8 June 2025, Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad, alongside Dharavi MLA Jyoti Gaikwad, protested in Kurla. She demanded the Mother Dairy land be transformed into a botanical garden, not handed to Adani for housing redevelopment. She criticised the government for using police force to suppress dissent, accusing it of favouring the Adani Group and enabling a “land grab”
Opposition voices also highlight concerns over transparency. Critics point to unclear eligibility surveys, potential eviction of many residents, and absence of detailed plans for rental versus free‐sale housing
Govt Considers Relocating Bengaluru Cricket Stadium After Stampede
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah outlines safety plan amid tragedy
A stampede outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium on 4 June 2025 claimed 11 lives and injured several. In response, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said the government is considering relocating the stadium to avoid such disasters in future.
Siddaramaiah described the incident as “deeply distressing” and stressed that “such an incident should not happen under any government.” He confirmed a decision is being explored to move the venue to a safer location
Following the tragedy, five police officers have been suspended over crowd management failures. The CM also stated that both the political secretary and the state intelligence chief have been removed from their positions .
The stampede occurred as overcrowding was worsened by rumours of free entry at Gate 7. Estimates put the crowd between 200,000–300,000, far exceeding the stadium’s 35,000 capacity. Authorities cited poor planning and lack of clear entry protocols as major factors .
A magisterial inquiry and a CID probe have been ordered. A one-man judicial commission is expected to deliver its report within 15 days .
