India is strengthening women’s safety with laws, helplines, and support services. The government has introduced several initiatives to ensure safety at home, work, and public spaces. A multi-pronged approach is in place to fight crimes against women.

Nirbhaya fund: securing women’s future
The Nirbhaya Fund finances women’s safety projects nationwide. The fund has ₹7712.85 crore, with ₹5846.08 crore already used. It supports schemes like:
- One Stop Centres (OSCs) – Medical, legal, and psychological help.
- ERSS-112 – Emergency helpline for police, ambulance, and fire services.
- Women Helpline 181 – Support for victims of violence.
- Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) – Quick trials for sexual offenses.
- Anti-Human Trafficking Units (AHTUs) – Action against trafficking networks.
- Women Help Desks (WHDs) – Dedicated support in police stations.
Helplines: quick support, anytime

Women in distress can seek help through dedicated helplines.
- ERSS-112: One number for all emergencies.
- Women Helpline 181: Round-the-clock assistance and referrals.
- SHe-Box: Online complaint system for workplace harassment cases.
Fast-Track justice: no more delays
Legal reforms are helping speed up justice for women.
- Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023 – Tougher punishment for crimes like rape.
- Fast Track Special Courts – Exclusive courts for rape and POCSO cases.
- Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act – Legal action against abuse.
- Dowry Prohibition Act – Crackdown on dowry-related crimes.
- Prohibition of Child Marriage Act – Stopping early marriages.
- Workplace Harassment Law (POSH 2013) – Protection at offices and factories.

Mental health: the missing link
Crime victims often suffer trauma and emotional distress. Project Stree Manoraksha, by NIMHANS, provides mental health support at One Stop Centres. Experts train staff to handle trauma-sensitive cases.
India’s safety measures for women are stronger than before. Laws, helplines, and mental health support are in place. The real change, however, lies in strict enforcement. Women must feel safe everywhere—at home, work, or outside.
