When tradition meets innovation, history takes on a new form. Krishnapriya Girish Nair, a final-year Fashion Designing student at Amity University, has done exactly that. Hailing from Vasai, she has brought pride to her family, community, and the Malayali diaspora by winning the top award in the Elevated Indianwear category at the prestigious LIVA Protégé 2025.
Krishnapriya’s collection, titled “Chintz CTRL+R”, triumphed over 239 participants from across India at the grand finale in Mumbai. The collection captured the jury’s attention with its creative reinterpretation of Chintz traditional hand-painted, sun-dyed textiles that originated in the Indian subcontinent and became India’s earliest global fashion export.
The title CTRL+R carries symbolic meaning. Inspired by the digital command to refresh a webpage, it reflects Krishnapriya’s vision of “recoding” history—reviving and modernising classic Chintz patterns for a contemporary, global audience. The collection seamlessly blended flowing traditional sarees with structured, modern silhouettes. The result was a series of saree-gowns that created a striking dialogue between heritage and innovation. Each garment told a story of identity, patterns, pixels, and pride.
Sustainable, premium fabrics such as Livaeco Linen Satin, 100% Modal, and Excel Linen added elegance and fluidity to the ensembles. Their eco-conscious quality enhanced the movement of each garment, perfectly aligning with the concept of Elevated Indianwear rooted in tradition yet globally relevant.
What impressed the jury was not only the originality of the designs but also the conceptual clarity. Chintz CTRL+R went beyond fashion; it was a narrative where history, technology, and identity converged on the runway. The confident execution, creative storytelling, and visual appeal helped Krishnapriya stand out in a highly competitive field.
Along with the title, Krishnapriya received a cash prize of ₹1,50,000, a certificate, and a memento. Her win has sparked celebrations in Vasai and among the Malayali community. Daughter of Girish and Surabhi Nair, she has shown that tradition does not need to be changed to remain relevant, it needs to be understood and reinterpreted.
Through Chintz CTRL+R, Krishnapriya has demonstrated that Indian heritage can step confidently into the future while retaining its essence. This national victory is not only a significant milestone but also the promising start of a remarkable journey in fashion design.
