Lionel Messi is reportedly nearing a contract extension with Inter Miami CF, potentially keeping him with the Major League Soccer (MLS) club through the 2026 season. His current contract, set to expire at the end of 2025, may be extended to coincide with the opening of Inter Miami’s new stadium, Miami Freedom Park, in 2026.

Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas expressed optimism about Messi’s renewal, stating, “The stars are aligning for something great… It’s solely his decision.” Mas anticipates a decision within the next 60 to 90 days, aiming for Messi to feature in the new stadium.

Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, Messi has significantly impacted the team, scoring 42 goals and providing 21 assists in 48 appearances. His contributions have been pivotal in the club’s successes, including winning the MLS Supporters’ Shield in 2024 and advancing to the CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinals.

At 37, Messi continues to excel, playing a crucial role in Argentina’s national team and expressing intentions to participate in the 2026 World Cup. His potential contract extension with Inter Miami would allow him to remain active in MLS during this period, further elevating the league’s profile.

Concurrently, aspirations for Messi’s return to FC Barcelona are diminishing. Reports suggest that Messi is likely to renew his contract with Inter Miami, making a return to Barcelona increasingly improbable.
