In anticipation of the massive influx of pilgrims for Mauni Amavasya on 29 January 2025, Indian Railways has announced the operation of over 150 special trains to and from Prayagraj. This initiative aims to facilitate the transportation of devotees participating in the sacred bathing ritual during the Maha Kumbh Mela. Interestingly, 85 special trains were scheduled during 2019 Mauni Amavasya at the Maha Kumbh Mela in the city.

To manage the expected surge in passenger numbers, a train will depart approximately every four minutes from Prayagraj’s main junction and other stations within the division. The stations from which special trains will run are Prayagraj Junction, Subedarganj, Naini, Prayagraj Chheoki, Prayag Junction, Phaphamau, Prayagraj Rambagh, Prayagraj Sangam and Jhunsi.

This plan surpasses previous records, including the 101 special trains operated during Makar Sankranti earlier this month. Since 13 January, around 48.7 lakh passengers have arrived across nine stations in Prayagraj, with a peak of 13.9 lakh on 14 January. On Mauni Amavasya, one of the most significant bathing days of the Maha Kumbh, approximately 10% of the anticipated 10 crore pilgrims are expected to travel by train. Besides, the Prayagraj division of the Railways has implemented unique colour coded ticketing and shelter arrangements so that passengers have a seamless journey.

In addition to the special trains, regular services will continue as scheduled. The Prayagraj Railway Division has emphasized its commitment to ensuring a smooth and safe journey for all passengers during this auspicious period.

Pilgrims are advised to plan their travel in advance, arrive at stations early, and adhere to safety protocols to facilitate efficient boarding and deboarding processes. Railways has also increased on-ground staff to assist passengers and manage the heightened traffic effectively.

For detailed information on train schedules, routes, and booking procedures, passengers are encouraged to visit the official Indian Railways website or contact authorized railway inquiry services.

This extensive rail operation underscores Indian Railways’ dedication to accommodating the spiritual and logistical needs of pilgrims during the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025.
