A recent debate over the necessity of learning Marathi for Mumbai residents has ignited political tensions in Maharashtra. Senior Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Suresh ‘Bhaiyyaji’ Joshi commented that newcomers to Mumbai are not obligated to learn Marathi, stating that Mumbai encompasses multiple languages, with areas like Ghatkopar predominantly speaking Gujarati.

In response, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reaffirmed Marathi’s prominence, declaring, “The language of Mumbai and Maharashtra is Marathi. Everyone should learn and speak the language.” He also emphasized respect for other languages, asserting that valuing one’s own language fosters appreciation for others.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aditya Thackeray criticized Joshi’s remarks, emphasizing Marathi as Mumbai’s inherent language and accusing the BJP of undermining Maharashtra’s cultural identity.

Similarly, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut labeled Joshi’s statement as “treason,” urging state leaders to denounce the comments and uphold Marathi pride.
