Mumbai is facing an early summer heatwave. The city’s temperature recently hit 37-38°C, making it one of the hottest days in February. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning, predicting sweltering days ahead.
IMD Warns of Rising Heat
IMD officials reported that Mumbai’s temperature was nearly 5°C above normal. They attributed the spike in daytime temperatures to strong easterly winds. The IMD has warned that the hot spell may continue for the next few days.
“Temperatures are unusually high for this time of the year. Hot conditions will persist,” an IMD official stated.
What’s Causing the Heat?
IMD experts say a combination of factors is responsible for the rising temperatures:
- Strong easterly winds: Warm inland winds are heating up the city rapidly.
- Weak sea breeze: Mumbai usually enjoys relief from heat due to sea winds. This time, the breeze is delayed, increasing humidity.
- Clear skies: No cloud cover means direct sunlight is heating up the city faster.
- Dry air from North India: Warm air currents from central and northern India are reaching Mumbai.

More Hot Days Ahead
Weather enthusiasts predict that the hot weather conditions are likely to peak between March 9 and 11. IMD has urged residents to take precautions as temperatures may remain high over the next few days. Heat-related illnesses such as dehydration and heat strokes could rise.
Citizens are advised to:
- Drink plenty of water
- Wear light-coloured clothes
- Avoid going out in the afternoon
Mumbai’s weather is becoming unpredictable. With temperatures touching 37.4°C in February, summer might arrive earlier than expected.
