India’s push for clean energy has hit a major milestone. The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has brought solar power to 10 lakh households as of 10 March 2025. Launched on 13 February 2024, the scheme aims to make solar energy more accessible and reduce dependency on traditional electricity sources.

Rapid Growth and Financial Support
The initiative has seen overwhelming response. A total of 47.3 lakh applications have been received so far. The government has already disbursed ₹4,770 crore in subsidies to 6.13 lakh beneficiaries, easing the financial burden of installation.
To encourage adoption, collateral-free loans of up to ₹2 lakh are available at a subsidised 6.75% interest rate. Public sector banks have processed 3.10 lakh applications, approving 1.58 lakh and disbursing 1.28 lakh.
State-Wise Progress
Some regions have excelled in implementation. Chandigarh and Daman & Diu have met 100% of their rooftop solar targets for government buildings. Rajasthan,Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu have also reported strong progress.

Environmental and Economic Impact
The benefits extend beyond homes. Each solar installation offsets carbon emissions equivalent to planting 100 trees. The scheme is also expected to save the government around ₹75,000 crore annually in electricity costs.
Subsidy Breakdown
The subsidy varies depending on household electricity consumption and the corresponding solar plant capacity:
| Monthly Consumption (Units) | Solar Capacity (kW) | Subsidy (₹) |
| 0-150 | 1-2 | 30,000 – 60,000 |
| 150-300 | 2-3 | 60,000 – 78,000 |
| Above 300 | Above 3 | 78,000 |

How to Apply
Households can apply through the National Portal. The site provides vendor listings, system size recommendations, and a benefits calculator. With correct details, the subsidy approval process takes around 15 days post-application.
Future Roadmap
The government aims to extend solar power to 1 crore households by 2026-27. With continued momentum, the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is shaping a self-reliant, sustainable energy future for India.
