A 17-year-old student from Tamil Nadu has secured admission to one of the world’s most prestigious universities after receiving a full scholarship worth Rs 3.55 crore to study at Brown University in the United States. Pranav Ilango, a resident of Erode, will pursue an undergraduate degree in Public Health and Applied Mathematics, with the scholarship covering his tuition fees and living expenses for all four years.
Apart from earning admission to the Ivy League University, Pranav also received a 100 per cent scholarship offer from the University of Hong Kong, highlighting his outstanding academic achievements and global recognition.
For Pranav, the achievement is the result of years of dedication, mentorship and a clear vision of using education, mathematics and technology to solve real-world problems, particularly those affecting underserved communities.
From Erode to the Ivy League
A senior student at CS Academy, Erode, Pranav began preparing for his international academic journey at an early age. At just 13 years old, he joined Dexterity Global’s National Scholar Development Programme, where he received mentorship and training that helped shape his academic abilities, leadership skills and problem-solving mindset.
His academic record has been exceptional throughout his school years. Pranav was recognised among the Outstanding Cambridge Learners and earned the distinction of becoming a World Topper in IGCSE Mathematics, placing him among the highest-performing students globally.
For him, mathematics has always been more than just a subject. He views it as a powerful tool to understand complex challenges, analyse data and develop practical solutions that can improve people’s lives.
His admission to Brown University reflects this vision. By choosing to study Public Health and Applied Mathematics, Pranav hopes to combine mathematics, technology and data science to better understand public health challenges and create meaningful solutions.
Brown University, founded in 1764, is one of the eight Ivy League universities in the United States and is widely known for its interdisciplinary approach to education. The institution’s strengths in mathematics, science and public health will provide Pranav with an opportunity to further develop his interests in research and innovation.
Using technology and data to solve real-world problems
Beyond academics, Pranav has developed a strong interest in software development, entrepreneurship, engineering, artificial intelligence, programming and data science. Over the years, these interests have evolved into a broader ambition of using technology and data-driven insights to improve public health and support communities with limited access to resources.
His long-term goal is to establish a public health venture that provides governments and communities with meaningful data insights, particularly in underserved regions where reliable information can help improve healthcare planning and decision-making.
Pranav has also explored technology-based solutions in both education and healthcare, reinforcing his belief that mathematics and technology can work together to solve problems that affect millions of people.
He believes the mentorship he received through Dexterity Global has shaped not only the way he studies but also how he approaches leadership, innovation and critical thinking. At Brown University, he hopes to deepen his knowledge while developing practical solutions that can create a positive impact in India and beyond.
Pranav’s journey from a classroom in Erode to one of the world’s leading universities highlights the importance of determination, mentorship and purpose-driven learning. While the Rs 3.55 crore scholarship marks a significant milestone, he sees it as the beginning of a larger mission—to use mathematics, technology and public health to build solutions that improve lives and create opportunities for communities that need them the most.
