Mumbai: It was an evening of courage and renewed hope in Mumbai as filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani met cancer survivors at a special awareness event organised by the Institute of Cancer Care at Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital. Known for weaving meaningful social messages into his films, Hirani stood alongside real-life fighters who have battled cancer and emerged stronger.
The event revolved around a powerful theme: “Cancer Is Just a Comma, Not a Full Stop.” More than 100 cancer survivors, caregivers and clinicians attended the gathering. The focus was clear and direct. Early detection, regular screening and timely treatment can change outcomes. Organisers stressed that awareness remains the first line of defence against cancer.
One of the most moving parts of the programme was the “Survivors’ Diary” session. Several cancer warriors shared personal stories of diagnosis, treatment and recovery. Their words reflected fear, resilience and determination. At the same time, their journeys reinforced an important medical fact. With early diagnosis and appropriate care, many cancers are treatable and even curable.
A musical performance by Jagdish Lalwani added warmth to the evening. The combination of lived experiences, expert guidance and music created an atmosphere of solidarity rather than sorrow. It felt less like a hospital event and more like a community coming together.
Dr Ganesh Nagarajan, Vice Chairman of HPB and GI Surgery and Oncology Lead at Nanavati Max Hospital, said that survivor stories serve as powerful reminders that cancer can be fought. He noted that awareness and timely screening save lives. Dr Hemant Tongaonkar, HOD and Principal Director of Urologic and Gynaecologic Oncosurgery, emphasised the need to dispel myths and reduce fear surrounding cancer treatment.
Among the speakers was 54-year-old financial analyst Sunil Rodriguez, who completed his treatment two years ago. He credited disciplined medical care and trust in doctors for his recovery. His message was simple. Follow medical advice carefully and seek expert guidance early.
The Nanavati Max Institute of Cancer Care offers advanced treatments including chemotherapy, targeted therapy, robotic oncology using the Da Vinci Xi Surgical System, high precision radiosurgery, stereotactic body radiotherapy and immuno-oncology services.
The evening closed with a clear message. Cancer is not always the end of the story. With awareness, medical support and resilience, it can become a comma in life’s journey rather than a full stop.
