A massive avalanche near the under-construction Malari-Sumna road in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district has left over 50 workers feared trapped. The disaster occurred at a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) construction site, triggering a large-scale rescue operation.
According to officials, heavy snowfall and unstable weather conditions led to the avalanche, burying parts of the tunnel under snow and debris. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and BRO teams have been deployed for rescue operations.
The rescue teams are battling harsh weather and challenging terrain as they work tirelessly to reach the trapped workers. Specialised equipment and trained personnel have been mobilised to accelerate the rescue process.

Authorities have also set up medical aid facilities near the site to provide immediate assistance to survivors. Helicopters are on standby for emergency evacuations.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has assured that all resources are being utilised to ensure a swift and safe rescue operation. He is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with central agencies.
This incident is a stark reminder of the 2021 flash floods in Chamoli, which resulted in significant loss of life and infrastructure damage.
Rescue operations are ongoing, and officials are hopeful of pulling out survivors. Families of the trapped workers have been assured of every possible support.
