Obesity is emerging as a significant health threat in India, with alarming rates of people becoming overweight and at risk of diseases like diabetes and heart problems. The shift towards unhealthy diets and sedentary lifestyles has made this a growing concern. Recognising the urgency, the Indian government is ramping up efforts to combat obesity, with key initiatives like Fit India Movement, Khelo India, and POSHAN Abhiyaan.

Prime Minister Modi recently stressed the importance of reducing edible oil consumption and launching a national movement to tackle obesity. He has called on prominent individuals across India to lead the charge, encouraging small lifestyle changes for a healthier, fitter future.
India’s obesity problem is also affecting children, with a noticeable increase in childhood obesity. According to the National Family Health Survey, 24% of women and 23% of men are obese or overweight. The government is responding with policies aimed at improving public health and promoting better dietary habits, physical activity, and awareness.
The Ministry of AYUSH is also contributing with Ayurvedic treatments for obesity, while the Ministry of Women and Child Development focuses on preventing childhood obesity through its POSHAN Abhiyaan programme.

India is working towards a healthier future through collaborative government efforts, integrating health policies, traditional practices, and community engagement to fight the obesity epidemic.
