World Consumer Rights Day, observed annually on March 15, highlights the importance of consumer rights and protection. Established in 1983, this day commemorates President John F. Kennedy’s 1962 address to the US Congress, where he first recognised consumer rights.

The 2025 theme, “A Just Transition to Sustainable Lifestyles,” emphasises making sustainable, healthy lifestyle choices accessible and affordable for all. It underscores the need for these transitions to uphold basic rights and needs, calling for stronger consumer protection and empowerment worldwide.
In India, the Department of Consumer Affairs has launched initiatives to empower consumers and ensure a fair marketplace. Notably, the Consumer Protection Act of 2019 established a three-tier quasi-judicial system—Consumer Commissions at district, state, and central levels—to provide swift redressal of consumer disputes, including those related to unfair trade practices.

To promote consumer welfare, the Consumer Welfare Fund provides financial assistance to strengthen the consumer movement. In the fiscal year 2024-25, ₹32.68 crore were allocated to various states to establish or enhance their Consumer Welfare Funds. Currently, 24 states and one union territory have established these funds.

The E-Daakhil portal, launched on September 7, 2020, offers an online platform for consumers to file grievances, ensuring a paperless and transparent process. This initiative has revolutionised consumer rights by providing an efficient and convenient way to approach consumer forums without the need for physical presence.
As we observe World Consumer Rights Day 2025, the focus remains on ensuring a safer, more transparent, and consumer-friendly economy. Embracing sustainable lifestyles is not just a choice but a necessity for a just and equitable future.
