Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh resigned from his post Sunday, nearly two years after ethnic violence erupted in the state. Singh submitted his resignation to Governor Anusuiya Uikey, bringing an end to his tenure as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader in the northeastern state.

The decision comes after months of political uncertainty and pressure from various quarters, including opposition parties and civil society groups, over the government’s handling of ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities.
Manipur has been embroiled in violent ethnic clashes since May 2023, with the conflict primarily between the majority Meitei community, residing in the Imphal Valley, and the Kuki-Zo tribes in the hill districts. The violence has led to the deaths of over 200 people and the displacement of thousands, with continued unrest in several parts of the state.
Singh, who has served as Manipur’s Chief Minister since 2017, faced severe criticism over his administration’s inability to restore peace in the state. Reports of armed clashes, destruction of homes, and targeted attacks on different communities have dominated headlines, leading to calls for his resignation.
While Singh remained a key figure in Manipur politics, his position within the BJP had been uncertain for months. The party’s central leadership had been considering a leadership change as criticism over the handling of the ethnic violence intensified.
The situation escalated further as civil society groups and opposition parties demanded his resignation, blaming his administration for failing to control the violence and ensure rehabilitation for displaced communities.
There were also reports of dissatisfaction within the BJP ranks, with speculation about potential successors and a reshuffling of the state’s leadership to stabilise the situation.
With Singh stepping down, the BJP will have to appoint a new leader to navigate the complex political and security challenges facing Manipur. The selection of a successor will be crucial in determining the state’s path forward, particularly in addressing communal tensions and restoring governance.
The resignation also raises questions about the BJP’s handling of the northeast region, where ethnic and political challenges continue to pose significant governance hurdles.
For now, all eyes are on the BJP leadership’s next move and how Manipur’s political landscape unfolds in the coming weeks.
