The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has intensified its action against unauthorised structures in Malvani, Malad West. A major demolition drive was carried out recently, targeting illegal residential and commercial buildings.
In a well-coordinated operation, BMC officials demolished multiple unauthorised structures, including ground-plus-two-storey commercial buildings and ground-plus-one-storey residential units. These illegal constructions had encroached upon public land, violating municipal regulations. The action covered an area of approximately 4,200 square feet.
The demolition drive in Malvani, Malad West, was carried out on Saturday under the leadership of Kundan Valvi, Assistant Commissioner of P North, along with Designated Officers Sagar Rane and Nitin Chaudhari. During the operation, authorities demolished five unauthorised commercial structures (ground plus two floors) spanning approximately 3,000 sq. ft. and four unauthorised residential structures (ground plus one floor) covering around 1,200 sq. ft. in the Rathodi area. To ensure a swift and efficient process, the BMC deployed two JCB machines and a team of 20 staff members.
Background and Growing Encroachments
Malvani has seen a rise in unauthorised constructions over the years, with illegal property dealings becoming a common issue. Many of these structures are built without proper approvals and later sold to unsuspecting buyers. Authorities have been working to curb this trend by regularly conducting demolition drives in different parts of the city.
Challenges Faced by Officials
During the demolition, some property owners protested against the BMC’s action. One individual attempted to halt the operation by threatening self-harm. The person was later booked by the police for obstructing official duties.
Despite such challenges, the civic body remained firm in its decision and ensured the operation was completed successfully. Officials have warned that further action will be taken against unauthorised structures in other parts of the city.
Future Actions and Public Awareness
BMC officials have urged residents to verify property documents before purchasing real estate to avoid legal complications. The municipal corporation continues to identify and remove unauthorised structures, with plans for similar demolitions in other localities.
Illegal constructions pose safety risks and contribute to urban planning issues. The recent demolition drive is part of a larger initiative to maintain law and order in the city’s real estate sector. BMC has assured that such actions will continue to safeguard public spaces and prevent unauthorised developments.
