What is the Maha Kumbh Mela?

The Maha Kumbh Mela is a grand religious festival held every 12 years at one of four rotating locations: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. It is regarded as the largest congregation of humanity, attracting millions of devotees, ascetics, and tourists from across the world.

The festival is centred on ritual bathing in sacred rivers, believed to cleanse sins and grant spiritual merit. The Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati meet, is considered an especially auspicious site for these rituals.

In addition to its spiritual significance, the Kumbh Mela is a vibrant platform for cultural exchange, philosophical discussions, and a showcase of India’s rich traditions. Recognised as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2017, it exemplifies India’s spiritual heritage and cultural unity.
