Apollo Defence Industries Pvt. Ltd. has acquired IDL Explosives Ltd., marking a significant moment in India’s defence manufacturing landscape. The all-cash deal was signed for ₹107 crore, giving Apollo complete ownership of the country’s first Indian-owned explosives company.
What’s the deal?
Apollo Defence, a subsidiary of Apollo Micro Systems Ltd., has purchased 78.65 lakh equity shares at ₹136.04 each. This gives the company 100% control over Hyderabad-based IDL Explosives, a manufacturer with over 64 years of legacy in mining and infrastructure explosives.
IDL, previously part of the Hinduja Group, had posted a turnover of ₹623 crore in FY24. This is a sharp rise from ₹395.38 crore in FY22, highlighting strong financial growth. It also has a net worth of ₹10 crore.
Why this matters
The acquisition signals Apollo Defence’s entry into the explosives domain, critical for its ambition to become a Tier-I Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) for integrated defence systems.
With IDL under its wing, Apollo can now offer end-to-end solutions in defence. This includes electronics, weapon platforms, and complete munitions. It boosts their potential in areas like artillery, missile systems, and high-impact weapons.
Apollo’s Managing Director B Karunakar Reddy called it a “landmark moment,” aligning perfectly with India’s goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
Why explosives, why now?
Global defence budgets are booming. The explosives market is projected to grow to $9.37 billion by 2029, with a CAGR of 8.8%. Countries like India, China, USA, and France are driving the demand with rising military investments.
The acquisition puts Apollo in a strong position to tap into this surge, especially in strategic and battlefield-grade explosives.
The road ahead
With this move, Apollo joins an elite club of private Indian firms building full-spectrum defence capabilities. It can now integrate explosive manufacturing with platform design and deployment, unlocking synergies across the defence value chain.
This deal isn’t just an acquisition it’s a launchpad for Apollo’s next chapter in the defence sector.
