BJP Crushes AAP in Delhi Election, Kejriwal Loses Stronghold

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) delivered a humiliating defeat to Arvind Kejriwal and his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Delhi Assembly election on Saturday.
As of 6.30 PM, according to the Election Commission of India, the BJP had secured 47 seats and was leading on one more, bringing its final tally to 48 seats. AAP, which ruled Delhi for a decade, won 21 seats and was leading on one more. Congress, despite its earnest efforts, failed to win a single seat.
For AAP National Convenor Kejriwal, this defeat was particularly devastating as he lost the New Delhi assembly seat to BJP’s Parvesh Sahib Singh, Kejriwal secured 25,999 votes, while Singh won with 30,088 votes.
The BJP cadre erupted in celebrations from the morning as early trends indicated the party’s dominance. As the day progressed, it became evident that the BJP was on course to form the government in the Capital. The party comfortably surpassed the majority mark of 36 seats, securing a decisive mandate.

Early evening, around 6.15 pm, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at the BJP headquarters at 14, Pandit Pant Marg in Delhi. Senior BJP leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of Chemicals and Fertilisers J. P. Nadda, Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva, all seven BJP MPs from Delhi including Manoj Tiwari, and several winning candidates, had reached the office before Modi’s arrival. Modi was welcomed by Nadda at the party headquarters. Shah, Nadda, Sachdeva, and others shared dias with Modi.
Modi Hails BJP’s Victory in Delhi, Promises Rapid Development
Addressing BJP members, Narendra Modi said, “Today, the people of Delhi are both excited and relieved. They are excited because of BJP’s victory, and relieved because they have gotten rid of AAP.”
He expressed gratitude to Delhi voters, saying, “I had requested the people of Delhi to give us a chance to serve. I bow to them for placing their trust in me. Delhi has given us immense love, and I will return it 1.25 times over. We are indebted to Delhi, and now, its double-engine government will repay this trust by accelerating the state’s progress.”
Modi described BJP’s win as historic, highlighting that the people had ousted AAP after a decade. “Delhi’s mandate is clear—this is a victory of vikas (growth) and vishwas (trust),” he declared.
He also said the people of Delhi had reclaimed their city, stating, “Today, Delhiites have underlined that they are the true owners of their city. Those who mistakenly considered themselves its rulers have been shown the mirror.” Reflecting on BJP’s hat-trick of winning all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi, Modi said, “While Delhi has always supported BJP in national elections, our workers had a small wish—to serve Delhi by winning the Assembly elections as well. This time, that wish has been fulfilled.”
Calling Delhi a ‘Mini Hindustan,’ Modi added, “Delhi embodies the idea of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat (One India, Great India).”
“Today, Delhi has given a resounding mandate to the BJP. The lotus has bloomed in every corner of the city. I assure every Delhiite of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas (Together for everyone’s development). Delhi has delivered a clear verdict in favor of clean, efficient, and transparent governance, free from conspiracy. The BJP remains committed to serving Delhi with dedication and integrity.”
Before Modi, Nadda also addressed the party workers. He said, “Delhi has stood firmly with the BJP in both the Assembly elections and the previous Lok Sabha polls. This clearly shows that Modi lives in Delhi’s heart.”
He stated that Modi has transformed Indian politics and the lives of its people. Unlike earlier politicians who made promises and forgot them, Modi introduced a “report card culture,” ensuring not just delivery but overachievement. “Modi’s guarantee is a guarantee of fulfilled promises,” Nadda asserted. He further said that the election results serve as a stern response to the corrupt AAP government, adding, “The people of Delhi have made it clear—they do not want such a party in power.” He assured that the BJP will fulfil its promises to the people of Delhi, just as it has done after winning in other states.
Earlier, Modi tweeted on X in Hindi and English and expressed his immense happiness about winning the prestigious Delhi Assembly elections. In a Hindi message, Modi wrote, “People’s Power Above All! Development has won, good governance has triumphed. A heartfelt salute and gratitude to all my brothers and sisters in Delhi for delivering a historic victory to @BJP4India! I sincerely thank you for the immense support and blessings you have given us. We guarantee that we will leave no stone unturned in ensuring Delhi’s all-round development and improving the lives of its people. At the same time, we will also make sure that Delhi plays a crucial role in building a developed India. I am extremely proud of all the @BJP4India workers who dedicated themselves day and night to securing this massive mandate. Now, we will serve the people of Delhi with even greater dedication and strength.”
In another English message, Modi wrote, “Jana Shakti is paramount! Development wins, good governance triumphs. I bow to my dear sisters and brothers of Delhi for this resounding and historic mandate to @BJP4India. We are humbled and honoured to receive these blessings. It is our guarantee that we will leave no stone unturned in developing Delhi, improving the overall quality of life for the people and ensuring that Delhi has a prime role to play in building a Viksit Bharat.”
Meanwhile, speculation is mounting over who will be the next Delhi Chief Minister. While some names are doing the rounds, the party leadership has yet to make an official announcement.
