In a significant move to bolster the Army’s artillery capabilities, the Indian Defence Ministry has inked contracts worth ₹10,147 crore. The deals, signed with Economic Explosives Limited (EEL) and Munitions India Limited (MIL), aim to supply advanced ammunition for the indigenous Pinaka multi-launch rocket systems.
The contracts encompass the procurement of high explosive pre-fragmented extended range rockets and area denial munitions. The extended range rockets can strike targets up to 45 kilometres away with precision, while the area denial munitions are designed to disperse sub-munitions over a wide area, effectively targeting enemy personnel and equipment.
This procurement underscores India’s commitment to self-reliance in defence manufacturing. By engaging domestic firms like Nagpur based EEL and Pune-based MIL, the initiative is expected to generate employment and stimulate the Indian MSME sector through component manufacturing.
The Pinaka rocket system, a testament to India’s indigenous defence capabilities, has been a part of the Army’s arsenal for years. The new contracts aim to modernise artillery rocket regiments, enhancing their ability to conduct precise and long-range strikes, thereby strengthening the nation’s defence posture.
This strategic move not only enhances the Army’s operational readiness but also aligns with the broader goal of achieving self-sufficiency in defence production.
