In a major diplomatic move, the Indian government has revoked 14 categories of visas for Pakistani nationals. This sweeping decision follows the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that left 26 tourists dead.
What’s Been Cancelled
The Ministry of Home Affairs has withdrawn visa categories across various sectors. These include:
- Tourist
- Business
- Student
- Medical
- Research
- Conference
- Missionary
- Mountaineering
- Sports
- Intern
- Journalist
- Employment
- Project
- Film
This cancellation affects nearly all civilian-level engagements between the two countries.
Why Now?
The move comes amid escalating tensions following the April 22 attack in Baisaran Valley. Security agencies confirmed the involvement of Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba. In retaliation, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and snapped diplomatic ties.
Now, with the visa rollback, India has taken a clear stance—security trumps diplomacy.
Impact on Bilateral Relations
This is the biggest visa freeze since the 2016 Uri attack. By targeting multiple entry routes, the Indian government has effectively shut the door on official, cultural, academic, and medical exchanges.
Visa issuance for Pakistanis had already slowed over the past few years. However, this formalised blanket ban marks a complete freeze.
What Remains Unaffected
Only very limited categories—like emergency or diplomatic visas—are likely to continue, though even those will be issued under strict scrutiny.
According to officials, this is not a temporary move. Until Islamabad “demonstrates accountability,” no visa relaxations will be considered.
