The Indian government has launched the National Critical Minerals Mission (NCMM) to reduce dependence on mineral imports and strengthen domestic supply chains. This initiative takes a crucial step toward achieving India’s ‘Net Zero by 2070’ target and promoting self-reliance.
The mission focuses on exploring, mining, processing, and recycling critical minerals like lithium, nickel, cobalt, and rare earth elements, which are essential for industries such as renewable energy, electric vehicles, and high-tech manufacturing.
India currently relies on imports for these essential minerals, but the government plans to change that by boosting domestic exploration and investing in overseas mining partnerships. The government has allocated an initial budget of Rs 16,300 crore and expects an investment of Rs 18,000 crore from Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) to drive economic growth and technological advancement.
This initiative aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, securing India’s future energy and technological needs while strengthening the global supply chain. By prioritizing sustainable mining and efficient resource utilization, the mission supports India’s transition to a cleaner and greener economy.
