India’s humanitarian gesture to Sri Lanka has become a lifeline for millions. Since 2016, India has gifted 88 ambulances to the island nation, which have helped save more than 1.5 million lives.

This initiative began under a grant assistance programme during a time when Sri Lanka’s public health system was under strain. The ambulances, provided across 25 districts and all 9 provinces, were aimed at strengthening emergency medical services in the country.
The impact has been profound. These ambulances are equipped with essential life-saving tools and trained staff. They operate 24/7 and offer free services to people in both urban and remote rural areas. For many citizens, this is the only emergency healthcare support available.
The role of these ambulances became even more critical during the COVID-19 pandemic. From transporting infected patients to delivering medical supplies and oxygen cylinders, they played a major role in the country’s pandemic response.
Even today, with Sri Lanka facing economic challenges, India’s ambulance network remains one of the most reliable emergency medical systems in the country. It continues to function when hospitals are stretched and fuel shortages hit basic services.
This quiet but powerful form of support has strengthened ties between India and Sri Lanka. It highlights India’s commitment to regional cooperation and soft diplomacy—not through speeches, but through real action on the ground.
India’s gift has not only saved lives, but also shown how meaningful help can build stronger bonds between nations.
