On August 6, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened Kartavya Bhavan in New Delhi, a modern green, and efficient new home for India’s Ministry of Defence.
Located close to the iconic South Block, Kartavya Bhavan is part of the larger Central Vista redevelopment project, which aims to modernise and centralise the government’s core infrastructure. This new building is not just about concrete and glass, it’s a clear symbol of how India’s governance is evolving to be more connected, streamlined, and forward-thinking.
The Legacy Behind Kartavya Bhavan’s Location
The place where Kartavya Bhavan now stands has a long and meaningful past. For many years, this location was home to Shastri Bhavan, a familiar and important government building in the heart of Delhi.
Shastri Bhavan wasn’t just any office, it was a busy centre where key ministries like Education, Law, Information & Broadcasting, and Health worked together. Many important decisions that shaped India’s future were made there.
Built after India’s independence, Shastri Bhavan was part of Lutyens’ Delhi, the historic area designed during the British era. Though the building itself wasn’t officially marked as a heritage site, it witnessed countless events – press briefings, major policy announcements, and everyday government work that affected millions of lives.
Now, with Kartavya Bhavan taking its place, the government is bringing a fresh and modern approach to governance. This new building reflects both respect for the past and hope for the future. With eco-friendly features, smart design, and better workspaces, Kartavya Bhavan is a step forward in building a more efficient and responsible administration for the country.
A Smarter, Greener Workplace
The old Defence Ministry offices were spread out across different buildings, making coordination slow and complex. Kartavya Bhavan solves that. Now, with all key departments under one roof, day-to-day operations will be faster and smoother.
What makes it even more impressive? It’s built with sustainability at its core. The building features green technologies, energy-efficient systems, and smart office spaces reflecting the government’s commitment to environmentally responsible development.
A Name with Meaning
During the inauguration, PM Modi highlighted the importance of the word “kartavya”, which means duty. He said the building is more than just a new address; it’s a reminder that everyone in public service must work with a strong sense of responsibility towards the nation.
He also noted that Kartavya Bhavan reflects the spirit of a “New Bharat” confident, capable, and ready to face the future.
Shaping the New Heart of Indian Governance
Kartavya Bhavan is one of several new structures coming up as part of the Central Vista project. The goal is to build a government hub that meets the needs of today’s fast-moving world not just in design, but in function.
This inauguration marks a major step forward in how India plans, works, and serves its people with better spaces, better systems, and a stronger sense of purpose.
