The Maharashtra government has decided to disqualify women owning four-wheelers from receiving benefits under the Ladki Bahin Yojana. The scheme provides ₹1,500 per month to women up to 65 years of age, with an annual family income below ₹2.5 lakh.
Authorities will verify eligibility by cross-checking data with the Regional Transport Office (RTO). The process is expected to take about a month. Only disqualification is planned, with no penalties or investigations.
Opposition parties have criticised the decision, calling it unfair. Congress leader Gopal Tiwari argued that many women purchased vehicles before the COVID-19 pandemic but later lost their jobs. He called the move an unjust exclusion of those in need.
The Ladki Bahin Yojana played a key role in the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance securing a strong victory in the recent Maharashtra Assembly elections. The latest policy change has now triggered a political debate over its fairness and impact.
