Mumbai (Anil Bedag): Mumbai witnessed a vibrant celebration of India’s organic richness as the inaugural Meghalaya Spice Festival 2026 brought the fragrance of the Northeast to the country’s financial capital. The landmark event positioned Meghalaya as a fast-emerging organic spice hub and underlined its growing ambition to build a strong presence in national and international markets.

A 140-member delegation from Meghalaya travelled to Mumbai with a clear mission. The group included farmers, entrepreneurs, cooperative leaders and senior government officials. Their objective was to connect directly with premium buyers, exporters and institutional partners, and to create stronger market linkages for the state’s spices.

Addressing industry representatives and stakeholders, Meghalaya Chief Secretary Dr Shakil P. Ahmed highlighted the authenticity and integrity of the state’s agricultural practices. He stressed that Meghalaya’s farmers respect nature and follow traditional, sustainable cultivation methods. According to him, this commitment to ecological balance is reflected in the cleanliness of the state’s villages and rivers, and in the superior quality of its produce.

Dr Vijay Kumar D, Commissioner and Secretary of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, outlined the expanding global footprint of Meghalaya’s spices. Turmeric grown in the state has already reached markets in the United States, Europe and the Middle East. Meanwhile, ginger exports have expanded to Singapore. He emphasised that the government is seeking long-term partners who believe in sustainable agriculture and are willing to ensure fair value for farmers.

The event also saw participation from Maharashtra’s Additional Chief Secretary Vikas Chandra Rastogi, National Turmeric Board Secretary N. Bhavani Sri and representatives from FICCI. Their presence underlined the festival’s policy and business significance, and highlighted the growing recognition of Meghalaya’s agricultural potential.

The state government’s strategy is focused on building a premium brand identity for Meghalaya spices in both domestic and global markets. Plans for the inauguration of the state’s largest spice-processing unit are expected to strengthen value addition and improve supply chain efficiency.

More than a cultural showcase, the Meghalaya Spice Festival 2026 served as a strategic market-link initiative. By connecting farmers directly with buyers, the event demonstrated how India’s Northeast is evolving into a competitive and sustainable contributor to the national economy.
