A violent mob stormed and vandalised the residence of Bangladesh’s founding leader, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, located in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area on the evening of February 5, 2025. The house, known as Dhanmondi 32, holds significant historical value as the place where Mujibur Rahman lived during Bangladesh’s liberation struggle.
Disturbing footage of the incident has surfaced, showing the attackers smashing windows, doors, and other parts of the property. The police were slow to act, allowing the mob to wreak havoc for several hours. Early reports suggest that the mob was part of a broader anti-government protest, although the precise motives remain unclear.
In response, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of Mujibur Rahman, condemned the attack, demanding swift justice for the assault on the historic house. Hasina expressed her distress over the damage inflicted on the property, which also houses the Mujibur Rahman Memorial Museum.
The attack has sparked outrage, with many Bangladeshis calling for accountability for those responsible. The incident has reignited tensions in the country, which has recently witnessed a surge in protests against the current government.
The attack on Dhanmondi 32 is seen as not only an act of violence but also a deeply symbolic attack on the legacy of the country’s founder. Authorities are expected to take further action as investigations continue.
