India to become home to world’s largest data centre, thanks to Mukesh Ambani
Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries, has announced plans to build the world’s largest data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat. According to Bloomberg, this ambitious project aims to position India as a major player in the global artificial intelligence (AI) landscape.
The data centre, which will have a capacity of three gigawatts, is expected to significantly boost India’s digital infrastructure. Reliance Industries Limited is partnering with Nvidia to equip the data centre with state-of-the-art Blackwell AI processors. This collaboration aligns with the Indian government’s push to develop the country’s digital and AI capabilities, backed by substantial investments.
During the Nvidia AI Summit 2024, Mukesh Ambani highlighted India’s readiness for AI expansion, stating, “We can use intelligence to bring prosperity to all and equality to the world. Apart from the US and China, India has the best digital connectivity infrastructure.”
The construction of the data centre is expected to create thousands of jobs, both directly and indirectly. The project is set to attract a plethora of ancillary industries, including those involved in hardware manufacturing, software development, and data management services. The initiative will also likely spur advancements in renewable energy, given the emphasis on sustainable power sources for the data centre’s massive energy requirements.
