Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is set to witness a major transformation in urban transport with the introduction of 100,000 bike taxis. This initiative aims to offer a cost-effective and faster commuting option for millions of daily travellers. The Maharashtra government is preparing to introduce bike taxi services across the state, with plans to launch by April 2025. The Transport Department has already submitted a policy proposal, which is awaiting approval from the cabinet

Bike taxis are expected to be 60% cheaper than auto-rickshaws, making them an attractive choice for short-distance travel. With increasing traffic congestion in Mumbai, bike taxis could significantly reduce commute times, especially for last-mile connectivity from railway stations and metro stops.
The Maharashtra government has greenlit the expansion of bike taxi services across MMR. The initiative is expected to be rolled out soon, with proper regulations ensuring rider safety and service quality. The move aligns with the state’s efforts to promote shared mobility and reduce dependence on private vehicles.
Experts believe this initiative will ease congestion, reduce travel costs, and provide employment opportunities for bike taxi riders. Commuters will have an additional option alongside traditional auto-rickshaws and cabs, enhancing overall transport efficiency.
With the growing demand for affordable transport solutions, bike taxis could reshape Mumbai’s commuting landscape, offering a faster, cheaper, and more convenient alternative for daily travellers.
Currently, bike taxis in Mumbai operate unofficially through various app-based aggregators. The new policy aims to regulate the sector by assigning yellow number plates to each bike taxi, ensuring compliance with legal standards. A transport department official stated that new rules are also being formulated to provide social security benefits, encouraging legitimate operators while curbing illegal services.
However, the plan is facing opposition from auto-rickshaw and taxi unions, who fear heightened competition. Despite this, Maharashtra is moving forward to join states like Assam, Gujarat, Delhi, and Karnataka, where bike taxis are already legally operational.
Fare and Availability
Bike taxis in Mumbai are expected to charge around ₹3 per kilometre, similar to rates in cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai. These services will be accessible via ride-hailing apps.
Government Regulations and Safety Measures
The Maharashtra government has approved a regulatory framework for licensing bike taxis. The policy mandates:
- Helmet usage for both riders and passengers.
- Strict vehicle maintenance requirements.
- Special safety protocols for female riders.
Additional Provisions
- Women riders will be encouraged to participate in the service.
- Bike taxi companies must register and obtain licences with fixed fees.
- Regulations will be enforced to ensure compliance with safety and maintenance standards.
