Mumbai residents will soon have to pay a monthly fee for waste collection as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to introduce charges between ₹100 and ₹1,000 per household. The move, aimed at covering waste management costs, has sparked mixed reactions across the city.
With Mumbai generating over 7,000 metric tonnes of waste daily, the BMC argues that the existing system is financially unsustainable. The proposed fee will vary based on property size, with larger flats and commercial spaces paying higher charges. Officials say the revenue will be used to improve waste collection, processing, and landfill management.
However, the decision has not gone down well with many residents, who see it as an added financial burden amid rising living costs. Some citizens have questioned whether the BMC will ensure better waste management in return for the fees. Others believe it’s a necessary step to maintain cleanliness and encourage responsible disposal.
The civic body is expected to finalize the fee structure and rollout plan soon. Public awareness campaigns on waste segregation and reduction may also follow as part of the initiative. Whether this move results in improved waste management or more discontent among residents remains to be seen.
