Mumbai’s overcrowded railway stations are set for a major upgrade as authorities move forward with an ambitious plan to build elevated decks above platforms. This initiative, covering 17 key stations, aims to decongest platforms and provide better amenities for the millions of daily commuters who rely on the city’s suburban train network.
With horizontal expansion nearly impossible due to space constraints, railway officials are opting for vertical solutions. These elevated decks will be constructed above existing platforms, allowing smoother passenger movement while reducing bottlenecks at ground level. The new decks will integrate with foot overbridges, ensuring seamless connectivity between entry points and platforms.
The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) is spearheading the project under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-3A). The initiative, launched in February 2024, is expected to be completed between 2025 and 2027, with an estimated investment of ₹947 crore. The elevated decks will house essential facilities such as ticket counters, toilets, seating areas, and food stalls, shifting many amenities from platform level to create more space for commuters.
Several key stations, including Nallasopara and Neral, have been confirmed for the upgrade. The new decks are designed to enhance commuter convenience, improve safety, and reduce overcrowding, which has long been a challenge for Mumbai’s railway infrastructure. By leveraging vertical expansion, authorities hope to meet the rising demands of the city’s rapidly growing population while modernising the suburban railway system.
