In a major update, over 20 lakh vehicles in Mumbai are set to receive new high-security number plates (HSRPs) as part of a state-wide initiative. The Maharashtra Transport Department has mandated the replacement for vehicles registered before April 2019. As of now, over 1 lakh applications have been received, with nearly 50,000 vehicles already fitted with the new plates.
To ensure compliance by the March 31, 2025, deadline, vehicle owners are urged to book appointments online. The process is entirely digital, including payment, and customers can select a nearby fitment centre based on their location. While the system is efficient, some users have reported issues with registration details not being recognised.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to replace more than 1.5 crore plates across Maharashtra, with significant changes expected to roll out in the coming weeks. As the deadline nears, the rush for fitting these new plates is expected to intensify, especially in urban areas like Mumbai.
