On September 4, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong at Hyderabad House in New Delhi for wide-ranging bilateral talks. The meeting marked an important step in deepening ties between the two nations, covering strategic sectors such as finance, digital innovation, skill development, civil aviation, maritime cooperation, and space technology. Both leaders expressed a shared vision of boosting collaboration in areas critical to growth and innovation.
The summit is expected to yield key agreements in multiple fields, reflecting the momentum gained since India and Singapore elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2024. Ahead of the meeting, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had met Prime Minister Wong and set the tone for the dialogue. Jaishankar described the talks as an opportunity to “chart a roadmap for our contemporary ties,” underlining the importance India places on this visit.
Prime Minister Wong, in his remarks after the discussion with Jaishankar, highlighted that they had explored regional and global developments while reviewing the “good progress in India-Singapore cooperation.” His words captured the essence of the partnership, which now extends beyond traditional trade to emerging areas like digitalization, sustainability, and advanced manufacturing.
This is PM Wong’s first official visit to India since assuming office, and he was accompanied by his wife and a high-level delegation that included senior cabinet ministers. The visit is significant not only for its diplomatic agenda but also for its timing, as it coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Singapore. The leaders are expected to use this opportunity to reflect on six decades of friendship while also building a future-oriented partnership.
During his trip, Prime Minister Wong will also call on President Droupadi Murmu and has already engaged in discussions with Health Minister J.P. Nadda and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, focusing on cooperation in health and finance. These meetings reflect the wide scope of bilateral engagement, spanning multiple ministries and sectors.
The Ministry of External Affairs emphasised that this visit is an important opportunity to review the robust and multifaceted cooperation between India and Singapore and to lay down a framework for future collaboration. Trade, investment, regional security, and emerging technologies are likely to remain central themes of discussion. With both nations sharing strong economic and strategic interests, the visit not only strengthens diplomatic bonds but also sets the stage for deeper cooperation in the years to come
