Rahul Gandhi shared an emotional message on social media, stating, “Your memories guide me every step.” He described Rajiv Gandhi as a leader who envisioned a modern and progressive India. His message underlined the lasting influence of Rajiv Gandhi’s vision on his political journey.
The Congress party also issued a statement highlighting Rajiv Gandhi’s contribution to India’s development. It credited him with initiating key reforms in telecom, IT, and panchayati raj systems. The party observed the day as a moment to reflect on values of unity, democracy, and innovation.
Born in 1944, Rajiv Gandhi became India’s youngest Prime Minister at age 40 after the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984. He led the country until 1989 and was known for pushing science and technology to the forefront of national policy.
Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on 21 May 1991 during an election campaign in Tamil Nadu by a suicide bomber from the LTTE. His death marked a turning point in Indian politics and left a deep imprint on the nation’s memory.
At the Veer Bhumi memorial, floral tributes were laid and silence was observed. Congress supporters remembered his leadership and legacy in speeches and online posts throughout the day.
The anniversary also brought attention to the larger political backdrop, as the Lok Sabha elections continue across India. Rahul Gandhi’s tribute reinforced his familial and ideological connection to the party’s legacy as the Congress continues its campaign.
