Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar on Thursday inaugurated RPG Art Foundation’s latest public art installation, Overshoot-Leaning Ecology, at Nariman Point. Created by acclaimed artist Arun Kumar H.G., the installation offers a thought-provoking interpretation of Mumbai’s evolving identity by bringing together the city’s historical roots, architectural transformation and aspirations for the future.
Installed at one of Mumbai’s most iconic waterfront locations, the artwork seeks to spark conversations about how cities preserve their cultural heritage while embracing rapid urban development. Drawing inspiration from the historic Elephanta Caves and the city’s modern skyline, the installation symbolises the continuous dialogue between tradition and progress.
Speaking at the inauguration, Rahul Narwekar praised the initiative for celebrating Mumbai’s unique character through public art.
“This public art installation by RPG Art Foundation beautifully reflects the evolution of our city. Through the elephant, the ancient Elephanta Caves and the modern architecture inspired by them, it brings out the balance between the past and the future. It truly represents the spirit of Mumbai,” he said.
The installation has been conceived by noted contemporary artist Arun Kumar H.G., whose work often explores the relationship between nature, history and urban life. For Overshoot-Leaning Ecology, he drew inspiration from one of Mumbai’s most recognisable cultural landmarks the Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its rock-cut sculptures and rich artistic legacy.
Sharing his thoughts on the project, Arun Kumar H.G. expressed gratitude to the RPG Art Foundation for providing him with the opportunity to create a work for such a prominent public space.
“I am grateful to RPG Art Foundation for giving me the opportunity to create a work of art for such an important location. The historic Elephanta Caves and their magnificent sculptures were a major source of inspiration for me. Through this work, I have tried to bring together Mumbai’s modern aspirations and its deep historical landscape,” he said.
The artist also revealed that the iconic elephant sculpture originally associated with the Elephanta Caves and now housed at the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum played a significant role in shaping the visual language of the installation. By reinterpreting this historic symbol, the artwork bridges centuries of Mumbai’s cultural evolution while encouraging viewers to reflect on the city’s changing landscape.
Located at Nariman Point, the installation is expected to become a new cultural landmark for residents and visitors alike. Beyond its visual appeal, Overshoot-Leaning Ecology invites audiences to consider the delicate balance between preserving history, respecting nature and planning sustainable urban growth.
Through this initiative, RPG Art Foundation continues its commitment to making art accessible in public spaces and fostering meaningful engagement between artists, communities and the urban environment.
