Satish Golcha has taken charge as the new Commissioner of Delhi Police, stepping into the role at a time when the capital faces heightened security concerns. His appointment not only reflects his long-standing service but also signals the expectation of firm and effective leadership amid mounting challenges.
A Career Built on Diverse Experience
Golcha belongs to the 1992 batch of Indian Police Service officers in the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram, and Union Territories) cadre. He most recently served as Director General (Prisons) in Delhi, overseeing major facilities including Tihar, Mandoli, and Rohini. In that capacity, he was tasked with managing rising tensions and violence within the prisons. He also held the top provincial police post in Arunachal Pradesh as DGP from February 2022 through mid-2023. Upon return to Delhi, his key roles included Special Commissioner of Police (Intelligence), Special Commissioner (Law & Order, Zone 2), heading the Crime Branch, and serving as Deputy Commissioner and Joint Commissioner in various districts.
Leadership in Crisis and Investigation
During the 2020 northeast Delhi riots, Golcha served as Special CP (Law & Order), coordinating responses during one of the capital’s most volatile periods in recent history. He also played an instrumental role in the Central Bureau of Investigation, leading breakthrough investigations such as the 2009 Shopian case, where his team conclusively debunked an alleged rape-and-murder narrative as orchestrated propaganda.
Appointment in a Time of Urgency
His elevation to Commissioner of Delhi Police came swiftly on August 21, 2025 – one day after an attack on Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a public hearing. The previous interim commissioner, SBK Singh, had held additional charge since August 1 following the retirement of Sanjay Arora. The swift transition reflects both an institutional desire for stability and a public demand for renewed security assurance.
Profile of a Capable Leader
Golcha commands a reputation as strategic, upright, and effectively grounded in administrative as well as field operations. His blend of intelligence experience, law-and-order leadership, and crisis management places him in a strong position to address Delhi’s ongoing challenges.
Now as Delhi’s 26th Police Commissioner, Golcha will have to balance the demands of urban safety, public reassurance, and political pressure. His track record suggests he’ll bring both steady administration and decisive action to the role.
