India’s higher education landscape is set to receive a significant boost with a landmark philanthropic commitment from the Tata Trusts to the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB). The endowment will support the development of IIM Bangalore’s new undergraduate campus in Bengaluru and strengthen its ambition to create a world-class learning and research ecosystem for the next generation of students.
The announcement marks an important milestone in IIM Bangalore’s expansion beyond its renowned postgraduate and executive education programmes. The Institute is now preparing to enter undergraduate education with a multidisciplinary approach designed to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving global economy.
Located approximately 27 kilometres from IIM Bangalore’s main campus, the new School of Undergraduate Studies has been conceived as a long-term initiative to provide high-quality undergraduate education rooted in academic rigour, innovation and global relevance. The project reflects IIMB’s vision of extending its educational excellence to younger learners and preparing them for leadership roles in a data-driven world.
The undergraduate school will commence academic operations in August this year with two four-year, full-time residential programmes. Students will be able to enrol in a BSc (Honours) in Economics with a minor in Data Science or a BSc (Honours) in Data Science with a minor in Economics. Both programmes have been designed to combine economics, business studies and advanced data science within a single interdisciplinary framework.
The inaugural batch will comprise 80 students, with 40 students in each programme. The limited intake is intended to promote personalised learning, closer faculty interaction and intensive academic mentorship. Institute officials believe this structure will help create a highly engaging educational environment while maintaining the quality standards associated with IIM Bangalore.
The support from Tata Trusts will play a crucial role in developing the academic and residential infrastructure required for the new campus. Beyond physical facilities, the endowment will also contribute to the establishment of research clusters focused on emerging and high-impact areas such as Artificial Intelligence, data science, algorithmic design, Indian Knowledge Systems and applied business learning.
The initiative also aims to attract distinguished faculty members from diverse academic backgrounds. By investing in research capabilities and teaching excellence, IIM Bangalore hopes to build an institution that can contribute meaningfully to India’s knowledge economy while remaining globally competitive.
Speaking on the occasion, Noel Tata, Chairman of Tata Trusts, said the organisation has a long tradition of supporting institutions that create lasting national impact. He noted that early-stage philanthropic investments have the potential to shape not only infrastructure but also the vision, character and long-term ambitions of an institution.
Dr Devi Shetty, Chairperson of the Board of Governors at IIM Bangalore, described the endowment as a transformative contribution that would help position the Institute on a path towards global leadership. He emphasised the importance of nurturing young talent capable of addressing the challenges of a technology-driven and data-centric future.
Siddharth Sharma, CEO of Tata Trusts, highlighted the Trusts’ commitment to supporting initiatives that combine ambition with meaningful social impact. He said investing in education remains one of the most effective ways to contribute to India’s future development.
Professor U Dinesh Kumar, Director-in-Charge of IIM Bangalore, explained that the programmes have been designed to encourage critical thinking, evidence-based decision-making and analytical skills. According to him, the support from Tata Trusts will help create a state-of-the-art learning ecosystem that aligns with India’s developmental priorities while preparing students for global opportunities.
The partnership between Tata Trusts and IIM Bangalore represents more than a financial contribution. It reflects a shared commitment to building institutions that can shape future generations and strengthen India’s position as a global knowledge hub.
