Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) is ramping up its environmental efforts. Marking World Forest Day and World Water Day, the company reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable practices. These efforts align with the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050 (TEC 2050), which aims for a net-positive environmental impact.

Water conservation remains a top priority. TKM’s plant follows the ‘4R’ strategy – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recharge. Around 89.3% of its production water comes from recycled sources and rainwater harvesting. The facility has rainwater ponds storing 51,000 cubic meters and 18 recharge pits to improve groundwater levels. A wastewater treatment plant recycles 60% of effluent, using it for industrial and gardening purposes. Groundwater levels improved from 25.8 feet (pre-monsoon 2022) to 16.1 feet (post-monsoon). TKM is moving towards a Zero Liquid Discharge facility.

Green Cover Expansion with Miyawaki Technique

Afforestation remains central to TKM’s sustainability drive. Under the Toyota Greenwave Project, the company has planted over 328,000 saplings since 2009. These efforts created an ecosystem of 790 plant species and 410 fauna species. The Miyawaki afforestation method helps sequester 30.86 tons of carbon per acre, compared to 8.45 tons from conventional planting.

Ecozone & Community Initiatives

The company’s 25-acre Ecozone serves as an educational hub for environmental conservation. Since 2020, it has housed over 650 species, including endangered wildlife. Over 40,000 school children have visited the site, promoting eco-awareness.

TKM also adopted the 3.4-acre Abbanakuppe Lake to enhance local sustainability. A 2023-24 impact assessment revealed that 90% of the community observed improved water quality, while 87% noted increased bird sightings. Around 8,000 residents from six villages benefit from this project.

Since 2020, TKM has distributed 250,000 saplings, covering over 100 acres. The company remains dedicated to sustainability, community welfare, and preserving ecosystems for future generations.
