On 17 January 2026, Indian Railways launched the first Vande Bharat Sleeper train connecting Howrah Junction in West Bengal and Kamakhya Junction near Guwahati in Assam. This new service represents a major improvement in rail travel for eastern India and the North East, providing faster and more comfortable overnight journeys between two important regions separated by nearly 1,000 kilometres. The train covers this distance in about 14 hours, allowing passengers to travel overnight and reach their destination refreshed.
Previously, trains on this route took much longer and offered only basic sleeper services. The Vande Bharat Sleeper changes this by providing modern air‑conditioned sleeper coaches in First AC, AC 2‑tier, and AC 3‑tier classes, giving travellers options based on comfort and budget. Passengers can board in the evening, sleep comfortably, and arrive the next morning without the fatigue of a long daytime journey. This is particularly beneficial for students, professionals, and families who frequently travel between these regions.
The train stops at several key stations along the route, including New Jalpaiguri, Malda Town, New Cooch Behar, and New Bongaigaon, connecting smaller towns and cities to major hubs. For many towns in North Bengal and Assam, this improved connectivity provides faster access to Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal. It also strengthens links for business travellers, traders, and tourists who need reliable and efficient transport.
Beyond speed and convenience, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is equipped with modern safety and comfort features, including updated toilets, improved lighting, charging points, and CCTV systems. These amenities make long journeys more pleasant, while the higher speed and fewer delays reduce overall travel time by around 2.5 hours compared to older trains. This makes rail travel a viable, cost-effective alternative to air travel for many passengers.
The train’s launch also has broader implications for commerce and tourism. Faster and dependable rail service allows businesses to move goods and meet clients more efficiently, potentially benefiting industries that rely on trade between eastern states and the North East. At the same time, tourists now have easier access to the North East, a region known for its natural beauty, cultural sites, and festivals, encouraging travel without the higher cost of flights.
In summary, the Vande Bharat Sleeper between Howrah and Kamakhya strengthens connectivity between eastern India and the North East, offering faster, safer, and more comfortable travel. It not only improves passenger experience but also supports trade, tourism, and regional development. For many travellers, this train is likely to become the preferred choice for overnight journeys, reflecting Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to modernise and enhance long-distance rail travel across the country.
